Genre notes

-'Genre is no longer a fixed set of elements'
-'Genre is a constant process of negotiation and change'

- So much genre mixing means the boundaries between genres is broken down
- genre will always change fluidity
- codes and conventions that enable audiences to sort things into groups
- there is a lot of crossover between genres - (metal, Grunge)
- A repertoire of elements that an audience expect to see in a media text of a specific genre

- Genre is useful because:
- it fulfils audience expectations
- it can be predictable
- shorthand means of communicating to the audience
- allows a quick set up of character/plot
- yet needs a twist to avoid cliché/boredom

- verisimilitude
- means how real/realistic a text is
- some genres have more than others

- pop
- camera work - close ups of faces (advertising), lots of movement, dynamic, not static, zooms
- editing - cuts in time with the beat, effects, high exposure, saturated colours, CGI
- mise en scene - grand luxurious, elaborate, exotic, over the top costumes, mostly high key lighting, gear stick phallic symbol, glamorous
- performance/narrative - abstract, singing dances, integrated, disjuncture
