Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when a media text uses ideas from another media text and either changes or adapts them or simply copies them.

One famous example of intertextuality is the video for Oasis' The Importance of Being Idle. The video uses ideas from kitchen sink dramas, Billy Liar and The Kinks. The video is set in northern England and its use of black and white is reminiscent of the kitchen sink dramas of the 60's. The storyline of the video is very similar to Billy Liar. The lead character in both is an undertaker and the Oasis video has shots identical to Billy Liar. The promo is also very similar to the video to The Kinks song Dead End Street. This could be seen as Oasis acknowleding their roots as they were brought up in Manchester. It could also be seen as a nod to one of their favourite bands who had a big influence on their music.
